When I was pregnant with my first, I read all the books. I asked for all the advice. I packed my hospital bag carefully. I made big plans--only those plans were about birth, breastfeeding, and maybe a bit of maternity leave. Then I read the books about baby's first year, and the books about toddlerhood. By that point, I realized, we are probably all really winging it, just doing the best we can. I knew what to expect when they were little, and then school hit. By that time, I had two children, and sure, they were on sleep schedules, but there were-and are, so many balls to juggle.
